The priest moves south to north and north to south
From AD 1 to now and back again,
Chalicing the chancel;
The woodlouse isopodically south to north
Walks from Devonian to Pleistocene
And still keeps on.

The scuffed black brogues just miss the small crustacean
This time, and it finds the chink, the tunnel
Into the churchyard,
Where thousands of its kindred scuttle grey stones
That fadingly remember a few dozen
Bipeds in graves.
