Great God of love and laughter, Of corn and laden tree, Grant us the gift hereafter To feast in heaven with thee; But keep us from forgetting, Amid this harvest food, The bread of Jesus' sweating, The wine of Jesus' blood. When Joseph ruled the nation He filled the hungry years; When Ruth met bleak starvation She gleaned her barley ears. Great God, forgive our blindness, Spare us the wrath from high, Who kill ourselves with kindness While others' children die. The golden sunshine dapples The poppies and the wheat; The pears and plums and apples Fall rich about our feet. Lord, we are poor and fickle, And blown like autumn leaves, But give us each a sickle To help bring home thy sheaves. Undated |
