Along the shores of Galilee No wanderer can fail to see The shining kingfisher in flight, His arrowy passage halcyon-bright, Or perched on carob branch at rest With light-reflecting snowy breast, Sun glinting on his chestnut head And dagger-beak all burnished red. The Bible speaks of many things, Of laws and wars and deaths of kings, Of miracle and mystery And fishers on this very sea; And yet it never says a word About this wonder of a bird. 1977 The Dancing Dust and other poems, 1983 |
