Only the round blank daisies stare
Unwinking at the sun,
While one by one the poppies bloom
And wither one by one.

Listless the laburnum droops
Now spring is growing old,
And faded blossoms damascene
The burning grass with gold.

And summer is but sorrow
In a million winter hearts —
Vanity of vanities,
And glory that departs.
