Without the iron bars And fly-blown glass, Gay and important The people pass; But counting the minutes Of work ill-done, We brood here sunless In sight of the sun, In sight of the blue deeps And doves in the towers We crouch in the dimness, Counting the hours; Our eyes fixed dully On one dull page — Voluntary linnets In a great stone cage. Fools! Look to the sky! Since we've forgotten how to sing, Shall we remember to fly? Undated, 1942-43 |
